The Odd Couple (1968) Gene Saks
It’s funny and it’s a classic, what more can one say? The dialogue is pure comedy, and the physicality played out by Lemmon and Matthau is too; because when one attempts to clear his sinuses in a crowded restaurant, or both are tangled in a witty-debate, it’s funny. It can be hard to detach the actor from the character, often baring similarity to their other characters, often seeing Lemmon’s C.C Baxter (The Apartment, 1960) come out in Felix, nonetheless, lives of Felix (Lemmon) and Oscar (Matthau) made it a very successful film of the year and became the premise in which ABC’s series, The Odd Couple (1970-75), was created.
I Am Love (2009) Luca Guadagnino
Director and winner of the BIFF Award for Best Feature Film for I Am Love, this is a film for film fanatics and admires of beautifully shot films. Tilda Swinton is impeccably dressed, not to mention, she speaks impeccably good Italian. With such stunning visuals, not to mention a greatly exectuted film, it seems to be a very much underrated piece of cinematic excellence.
“I Am Love is an arresting film in many ways, displaying, in parallel with the Recchi family’s theatrical deployment of the trappings of wealth, its own bracing and astringent sense of technique. It’s a high-IQ picture – there are few enough of those – and it’s fascinating, if a little bloodless. A gorgeously costumed and styled piece of work.” – Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
The Godfather (1972) Francis Ford Coppola
No film list would be complete without a Coppola touch, whether it be Sofia, Roman, Gia, or any of the other members of this creatively enthralling family; it is Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather which needs to be added to all Netflix lists. Deemed on of the greatest films, the first of the Godfather saga won 3 Oscars, and it is to no surprise they were won for Best Picture, Best Actor (Marlon Brando), and Best Adapted Screenplay. Dependent on your style of film viewing, this can either be a sociologically complex piece of work, or a thrilling tale of family, love, violence and revenge; either way, it is a must-watch for all.
