The Emmys 2014 are in the 66th year with 120 countries watching worldwide; a day of awards, fashion, celebration, recognitions and a worthy tribute to the late Robin Williams, by Billy Crystal.
“Robin Williams was an actor, comedian and writer who achieved early television success on the comedy series Mork and Mindy and went on to star in dozens of feature films, including The World According to Garp, Good Morning, Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, The Fisher King, Hook and Mrs. Doubtfire. His numerous awards and honours included five Grammys, four Golden Globes, two Emmys and an Oscar.”- Emmy
The fashion is always a highlight of the day, with stars from every corner of TV wearing the grandest of suits and the most glamorous of gowns. Nominees include Claire Danes, Kerry Washington, Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm and many more.
Deborah Messing wore an edgy Angel Sanchez gown, whilst Christina Hendricks dazzled in a red Marchesa gown, and January Jones also joined the list of ladies wearing red, a risqué colour to wear on the red carpet. Julie Bowen wore a Peter Som gown from the Fall 2014 ready-to-wear collection which he described as a collection of “roses, with some mystery”.
“Some people like to watch their favorite shows on a flat screen the size of a wall; others prefer to watch them in the palm of their hand, streamed or downloaded to their mobile phone or tablet. Either way, it’s still TV… Just as viewing options have proliferated, so have delivery methods. This, too, was reflected in the new nominations. Take the nominees for outstanding drama and comedy series.” – Bruce Rosenblum
Lizzy Caplan’s black and white Donna Karan Atelier gown was seemingly flawless, alongside Sarah Silverman in Marni, who brought her license alongside her lipstick and money. Clearly, the days events are never far from comedy, but there was nothing funny about Kate McKinnon’s dress who was looking great in a dress with a sheer lace bodice.
So, Lena Dunham made a bold choice in Giambattista Valli, and maybe it’s because it’s Dunham or maybe because it’s 2014, but we accept! Dunham’s interview with E! was also a highlight. Blonde, nominated and wearing pink. Julia Roberts Elie Saab dress was described as unexpected, nevertheless, it was a winner. Katherine Heigl took old Hollywood glamour to a whole new level for the Emmys. She looked stunning in the gown, but more importantly, she stood out, and all for the right reasons.
“How much do you love Julia Roberts short blue dress? The answer better be “lots” or you are kicked off the Internet.”-theguardian.com (Emmy awards 2014 – live!)
With all this fabulousness on the red carpet, it is easy to forget the Creative Arts Emmy® Awards which aired Sunday, August 24 in Los Angeles.
“Produced for the 20th year by Spike Jones, Jr., this year’s Creative Arts Awards featured an array of notable presenters, among them Jane Lynch, Tony Hale, Amy Schumer, Allison Janney, Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum, Comedy Central’s Key & Peele, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, Morgan Freeman, Tony Goldwyn, Aisha Tyler, Joe Manganiello and Carrie Preston. Highlights included Jon Voight’s moving posthumous presentation of the Academy’s prestigious Governors Award to casting icon, Marion Dougherty. Voight was one of Dougherty’s discoveries.”- Emmy
The Costume Design & Supervision Peer Group also showed their admiration for fellow Emmy nominees. They opened the Outstanding Art of Television Costume Design Exhibition at FIDM Museum & Galleries, which is set to shut September 20; pieces on show include costumes from Bonnie and Clyde, American Horror Story, The Good Wife and a very grandiose Downton Abbey set of costumes.
“There is no one at the Emmys I want to give an inappropriately long hug to more than Aaron Paul. Apparently he spent all day today giving out souvenirs to fans around L.A.”- theguardian.com (Emmy awards 2014 – live!)
The men were all looking dapper in their suits from every inch of the designer world. Kit Harrington wore an Armani Tuxedo with a pair of Jimmy Choo’s. Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul wore a Prada tux whilst Mat Bomer wore Tom Ford and as did a dashing Mr Jon Ham. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau hit the red carpet in Salvatore Ferragamo but it took Johnny Galecki to shake things up when he turned up in a black tux, no tie with undone buttons, somewhat disheveled hair, yet noonday’s complaining because he owned the look!
