WESTERN FLAG – John Gerrard

WESTERN FLAG (Splindletop, Texas 2017) John Gerrard

Along with his Vienna-based team, John Gerrard spent over a year developing this project- a rotating  full 360-degree panorama projected on an LED screen sits in the centre of the courtyard.
The artwork has been erected in the Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court of Somerset House marking Earth Day. With a live-stream broadcast from anywhere in the world via any smartphone, screen or tablet; Channel 4 also interrupted regular scheduling on Earth Day with this work being boadcast periodically.
The piece was commissioned by Channel 4 and displayed a virtual replica of Spindletop, Texas- the birthplace of the modern oil industry. It became a visual representation of climate change and society’s dependence on oil.
